A fun ski day!
After a bout of -20 for about 3 days last week, our normal winter temperatures are back so we decided to head up to Silver Star. Sophie had to work at McDonald's, so it was just the three of us today.

Alaska Trip
In July, we took our Alaskan Cruise with Celebrity Cruises (Eclipse ship). We traveled from Vancouver, through the Inside Passage, stopping in Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan Alaska and returning to Vancouver. 2058 nautical miles.
It was our "replacement" trip for our canceled Italy trip when our Uniworld River Cruise ship was involved in an accident which caused our trip to be postponed (we are going next summer instead). We have no regrets about going to Alaska. It was an amazing experience. The ship was lovely, but most of all the incredible scenery was stunning.

Remembering
I have a few posts that I need to get written, such as going into the experience of the recent CPHR conference and the award I was presented with, but it seems more appropriate to remember my Uncle Richard who passed away last night.
We were in Oliver visiting my parents for the Easter weekend when we learned of the sudden decline in his health. He is one of my dad's younger brothers and has been part of my life growing up in Oliver. He leaves behind his wife Linda, and grown children Barb and Dean. My fondest memories of him are seeing him at the Oliver Arena in the concession stand (he volunteered for the Lions Club) and in the Oliver Town Pool every summer. We would often drop in when we were visiting and we would find him there taking a cool dip.
He will be missed. (In the photo he is at far right).

The Weekend Lens
We travelled to Vancouver this weekend to celebrate Vic's mom's 87th birthday. We arrived in Langley on Friday night and drove down to White Rock to walk along the pier. Pretty but pretty busy.
On Saturday we drove down to Commercial Drive and had brunch in a little hole in the wall place. I like that Commercial is not "commercial" and there are no franchise places along the strip. We wandered around, looked at some of the interesting murals and then headed over to Stanley Park and went to the Aquarium. We hadn't been there since July 2011 and there have been some big renovations (grand opening is next weekend). The dolphin show was probably the big hit with the kids and seeing the under belly of the big sea turtle in his big tank.
Nice (but noisy) dinner at the Olive Garden with Grandma H and Russ.
Home on Sunday...tired but good.

Spring Break 2014
We arrived down in Langley, BC today for the start of our mini getaway for spring break. We checked into the Sandman Signature Inn, took a walk around the park at the community centre and then headed over to Vic's mom's place for a visit.
I desperately miss my camera (which is getting cleaned at the Nikon cleaning place). I borrowed a friend's camera for the short term.

The Winter Solstice

It is a beautiful mid winter day here. We had a snowfall yesterday so there is snow on the ground and the temperature is -2 degrees celcius so not too frigid.
We are enjoying some holiday socializing. We had my aunt and uncle over for coffee earlier this afternoon and then we are off to meet some friends for lattes at the Pink Cherry.
The kids at I took a walk mid afternoon. It was the kind of light that only comes when the sun is so low in the sky and diffused by clouds. Quite perfect for picture taking, really.

cousins
The kids had a Pro-D yesterday and went to the Revelstoke indoor pool with the daycare. Sophie isn't officially in daycare anymore, but was still able to go along for the trip. After that they had an overnight sleepover at the daycare. Scavenger hunts, movies, popcorn, friends - lots of fun.
Vic and I headed down to Vernon last night for dinner with our friends Veronica and Mike and two other couples. We went to this restaurant. The food was excellent. I love Thai food! This morning, with the kids at daycare, we were able to head out for a good 7 km run followed by a latte and then we picked them up.
Vic's brother and his wife and son came over for dinner tonight along with Vic's cousin and his wife and their two kids. The kids are all close enough in age that they had a great time playing in the basement. Nice to see them all getting along.

Ryder
Our little nephew Ryder was born on Wednesday July 10. While he was about 6 weeks early, he is getting stronger everyday. We were so happy we got to visit him today in Kelowna at the NICU.

Sunnybrae Camp
We dropped Sophie off this afternoon at Sunnybrae Camp. She is in cabin 7 this year and is happy that her head counselor is "Mango" (camp nickname). She was with her cabin last year. Hunter is one of her cabin mates (you can request who you would like in your cabin).
She is so excited -- her modules this year are guitar, rock climbing, swimming and drama. Sounds like a fun week. I thought this was a good link about some interesting advantages of the summer camp experience.
It is quiet with only one kidlet in the house. Fynn is colouring rather peacefully right now.

In other news, my aunt and uncle are settled into their new home in Salmon Arm after living almost 30 years out on the lake. We had a little housewarming visit with them this afternoon. The house is very comfortable and it is nice to see them getting settled in.

Happy Canada Day!
Our nephew Jonathon was performing at the Canada Day Children's Festival in our community today. He did a great act and had definitely one of the larger turn-outs for an audience. It was a scorcher of a day with temperatures in the mid 30s. Afterwards we headed back to our place for a swim in the pool, along with cousin Cairo and his mom and dad (Deb and Adam). Vic's cousin Neville came over for hamburgers a little while later for dinner. It was a full house but lots of fun.

Taylor Swift, etc., ..
We had quite a weekend, and the official Canada Day July 1 celebrations haven't even started yet.
We drove down to Vancouver on Friday. We had intended to see Vic's mom who is recuperating in the hospital but it turns out she was discharged, and that is another story....
Friday night we took a nice stroll down to English Bay with the kids after a nice dinner at Milestones. The seawall around English Bay is gorgeous. I haven't really been down that end too much before so it was all new and interesting to explore.
On Saturday we got up fairly early and had breakfast at Urban Fare which was just across the street from our hotel.. Excellent oatmeal! After that we headed over to the Vancouver Art Gallery and checked out the new Grand Hotel exhibit which was amazing. We then had some street food from the vendors just behind the VAG. Fynn had a hot dog (as usual),while the rest of us had something a bit more ethnically inspired.
We had tickets for the new FlyOver Canada attraction Canada Place. Fun and very much like Soarin Over California at Disneyland except with "Canadian content." :) Tickets are not cheap, especially when you are buying for a family, but one of those have to do it once sort of things.
The high point of the night for Sophie was dropping her off at BC Place to meet up with her Auntie Joanne who was going to the Taylor Swift concert with her. Taylor did a great show -- 3 opening acts, and then Taylor. She was there from 5pm - close to 11pm! A late night for sure.
Today we drove home and stopped in to visit Vic's mom who is convalescing at home. All in all a very busy weekend.

A great Father's Day
We started the day by relaxing outside with coffee and then headed over to Nico's Gardening Centre to pick up a few more plants to fill up our planters. Then some grocery shopping and back home. We spent a good two hours with the kids in the pool before it was time to head in, and Vic went off on a bike ride.
Then waffles for dinner and some family gardening. I picked up a beautiful pink hydrangea for 50% off yesterday so we planted that and then a few annuals out back. Sophie was our weeder while Fynn was really into planting geraniums. Then a treat from DQ and home to bed.

Sunday happenings
It was a pretty quiet day. We did a few chores, Vic went for a run, and then we took the kids swimming at the community centre. The highlight was having my aunt and uncle over for dinner. The big city
We were down in Vancouver over the weekend visiting Vic's mom who lives out in the suburbs and taking in some sites in the city.It was all good. For the most part the kids held up well, with the exception of some whining about going to an Indian food restaurant for dinner one night. Sophie in particular admitted that she liked the food afterwards.
Highlights included: Jethro's Fine Grub, Vancouver Police Museum, Buddhist Temple and Newton Wave Pool.

The Weekend Lens
This past weekend, we went down to Vancouver for Vic's cousin's little new baby's baptism. Little Mathilda is extremely cute, especially in her christening gown.
Vancouver was a bit quieter than the usual busyness of the summer months, so it was nice to not have to contend with lineups. We took the kids to HR McMillian Planetarium, which was good and really educational. Fynn also made friends with a little bulldog that was outside of Scoozi's where we had breakfast before the baptism service.
In other news, Fynn took a spill as he was running through the lobby of the Westin Bayshore this morning and knock his front tooth. It is loose, however, when we got home we took him to the dentist who thinks it may tighten up on its own. If it doesn't do so by Friday, she is going to put a bit of bonding on it to hold it in place as a bit of a brace.
Never a dull moment.
Sophie had her first class of her fall swimming lesson session (Level 5) and her piano lesson tonight.

The Weekend Lens
We took the kids to Fort Langley on Saturday. It is a National Historic Site of Canada.
The weather was a little cooler which seemed to keep the crowds away. We spent 2 hours or so there and the kids got some sense of what the Fort would have been like in the 1800s when it was a trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company. The guides were knowledgeable and were in period clothing with a number of interactive displays. Sophie especially like playing the extremely old piano in the Big House.
Later we took a walk down the town of Fort Langley. It is very quaint and has some neat little shops but Fynn was at his wits end so we had a quick lunch and headed out for a car ride and the for a browse around Ikea. We picked up a Picasso print for the kids' bathroom and some magazine holders for Sophie's room.
Then it was back to the hotel for a little rest. We stayed at the Sandman Signature which I highly recommend. It was close to Vic's brother's house so it made visiting easy. Sandman has really taken their hotels up a notch from their older ones. This one had a very clean, modern lobby and the service was professional. Plus the rate was really reasonable.
We headed over to the BBQ dinner and birthday party for Joy's 85th birthday. Nice time with family members we don't normally get to see very often.
Today we headed back home. It was a long drive - or certainly feels that way with Fynn. He is at a tough age to travel too far by car. The one thing that seems to save us is Vic's iPod. We have created a few playlists that the kids like, which keeps them entertained for a bit. Fynn has a very stubborn personality that makes it very difficult to do certain things with. We are doing Disney again in October and it will be a true test of whether he is able to handle going on a longer flight. We would not consider travelling with him internationally until he settles down. He did some heart-warming things at Fort Langley when he happily responded to the guide's question about "where did the pioneers go to the bathroom when they didn't have indoor plumbing?" The way he responds really makes us proud but 20 minutes later he will do something that makes us want to put him into a time out for the remainder of the day. I don't think we are at the golden age of kid travel yet. I am thinking closer to him being 6.
