ovaries and such

in the course of my entire reproductive life, i've never given my ovaries much thought. they seemed to work quite well. until this pregnancy. not that my ovaries failed me (i got pregnant after all), but a cyst was discovered on my 6 week u/s way back in March or so. more u/s followed. my doctor and my ob/gyn both said the odds of it being malignant were low (based on my age, and the fact that i've been on the Pill for a long time). when i had my u/s at BC Women's Hospital the u/s was sharp enough to pick up a hair. yes a hair on the cyst. there is a certain kind of cyst called a dermoid cyst that is actually the result of some ovarian eggs/cells going haywire and creating hair, teeth, skin and even thyroid cells. all very creepy but completely benign.

this is likely what i have. the question then becomes when to remove it. not worth the risk of removing it now (i'm at 22-23 weeks). best to wait for my c-section in October. the problem is that only an ob/gyn should remove it and not a general surgeon. that means that likely i will be delivering in Vernon about 45 minutes away. again, not a huge deal as my ob/gyn is from Vernon and she would do the surgery. it just means it won't be as convenient for Vic and Sophie (as right now we are only 10 minutes -- if that) from the local hospital.

i just want the cyst out (it's 5 cm) and this little beanie boy to be delivered safely.

when i was 16ish, i had some problems with my period so they did a bunch of ultrasounds too. they said i had a cyst, and same thing as yours - except until reading this now, i thought they had meant it was a collection of hair, nails, and teeth that you injested - now that grew there on its own! that grosses me out even more now. anywho, they weren't real worried about it, but they put me on the pill and at the next ultrasound it had disappeared. so they never knew for sure what it was on my ovary since it cleared up on its own.
