Dec 25 - Christmas morning

Sophie woke up about 8:15am this morning. Nice for her to sleep in a bit.
She got a glimpse of what Santa had left for her under the tree and immediately wanted to check things out. A Hannah Montana doll and a ride on bulldozer for Fynn.

It was a nice relaxing morning. Stockings, Santa presents, followed by breakfast (coffee, mango juice, bacon and french toast). Then back to open the rest of the presents.

Right now the kids are playing and I'm downloading pictures.

"It is good to be a child sometimes,
and never better than at Christmas,
when its mighty founder was a
child Himself."

Merry Christmas!

Dec 23 - 10 on Tuesday

1. We have rented this movie to watch with Sophie on Christmas Eve.
2. Vic and I are going to watch this one Christmas evening.
3. Vic and Sophie are making sugar cookies for Santa's visit tomorrow night.
4. This blog is kind of neat. I like her catch phrase: "Live simply, stay sane." Amen.
5. Fynn is close, so close to taking his first steps.
6. Scholastic book order came today. This book and this one.
7. I got my hair cut today. One more trim before Christmas.
8. I like this website - some cute clothes.
9. It is fun listening to Sophie and Vic bake together. Sophie is learning chemistry whether she knows it or not!
10. One of my favourite magazines is no more! A sign of the times we live in.

Dec 22 - my office kid's party

Tonight right after work we had a little get together for the children of people that work for my company. About 35 kids and their mom and dads or grandparents came. Sophie wanted to have nothing to do with Santa.

Here is a photo of us - looking a little tired, but happy that we could all sit together for a few seconds for a picture.

Dec 21 - Despereaux

Sophie and Fynn's daycare didn't have their annual Christmas party this year. Instead, they rented an old movie theatre and watched Despeareux. Some loveable, misfit characters -- but Vic and I thought it was a little dark for kids.

Dec 20 - 24 degrees below zero

It's cold here!
Beautiful blue skies, but the temperature was minus 26 this morning and has only inched up to minus 24. I guess we do live in Canada.

Annually we have a Christmas dinner out with our friends Bryan and Patti. This year we kept it simple and had breakfast out at our favourite German deli.

Tonight Vic and I are off to a movie. Nothing too hi-brow, but hopefully good for a few laughs.

Dec 19 - Happy Birthday Jackson

Our little nephew Jackson's 1st birthday is today.

Happy birthday little guy!

We love you :)

Dec 18 - little reindeers

On Wednesday, Sophie's daycare had a little performance of the kids singing their Christmas songs. Sophie was still recovering from her tongue incident so she wasn't in much of a mood to sing, but she did her best.

Dec 17 - Happy Anniversary

Today is my parent's 42nd wedding anniversary.

Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad!

And I eyed this on the TV schedule. A "must see" -- I loved the muppets as I was growing up. Sophie seemed to enjoy the show, but she kept call them "muffets."

Dec 16 - Sophie pulls a "Flick"

If you have ever seen the movie A Christmas Storyit's hard to forget the moment when one of the boys (Flick) is dared into sticking his tongue to a flagpole in the chilling cold of winter.

Sophie has never seen the movie, but evidentally the metal fence railing at her daycare was too tempting today. I got call from the manager today at around 3pm. She wanted to let me know about Sophie's "incident". She had been playing outside with the other kids and decided she wanted to touch her tongue to the fence. She then panicked when she realized when she was stuck and yanked her tongue off. And off came some of the skin on her tongue. Lots of blood vessels on the tongue = lots of bleeding = lots of crying = 3 soaked wash clothes later.

I'm glad I only had to hear about it and didn't witness this one. She is fine, and I'm quite certain she won't be trying that again anytime soon (nor will the other kids who saw it happen).

Dec 15 - Fynn roughed up the snowman

A few birthdays ago, Vic got me this 3 foot high snowman. He plays a tune and "shivers". Anyway, Sophie loves to dance with him while Fynn just looks at him and wonders what the heck is that thing?

Today, Fynn rumbled with the snowman. What's funny about this photo (that you can't see) is that the snowman is "shivering" while he's lying down. It was quite comical.

Dec 14 - red and creme

Christmas colours: I really like real Christmas red (not burnt red)
and creme. We picked up some stockings from HomeSense awhile back
and I love the colours together.

We also got our tree up. Photos of that another day.

Dec 13 - first haircut

Fynnie has been gradually acquiring a mullet.
This was not by design. Finally, I broke down and
got his hair trimmed up when Sophie was in for her haircut today.

Nothing drastic, just a bit of a trim across the bottom. He's cleaned up but still
has all of his adorable blond, slightly wavy locks.

***********

Sophie had another birthday party today. Funny, it was all girls.
Quite civilized for a group of 4 year olds.

Dec 12 - a night out at Christmas time

It is kind of fun to get dressed up during the holiday season.
Tonight was Vic's Rotary club's Christmas party.

After calling three possible babysitters, I finally was lucky and got Jessica (one of our daycare care givers) to watch Sophie and Fynn. She was great: the kids were bathed, jammied, fed and asleep (at least Fynn was) when I got home at 10pm (not a late night kind of gal).

Anyway, nice to get out for a little merriment.

Dec 11 - Mr. 14 month old and Ms. red tights

The two of them were playing around tonight as we listened to this. Nothing transports me back to my childhood faster, or that sounds like Christmas more than this music.

Fynn turned 14 months on Dec 10. He can sort of stand on his own for a few seconds.

Sophie is in love with her red tights with skates on them.

And Sophie took a photo of me. Not bad.

Dec 11 - overheard yesterday

sophie, slightly preoccupied with the idea that Santa could be watching her:

"mommy, i've been very good this year."

mama, remembering how she stuck out her tongue and called me "yucky" yesterday morning as she pouted about getting dressed for daycare.

"oh, what about yesterday morning?"

sophie, always the thinker:

"mommy, Santa still gives presents to cranky kids. i was just cranky."

Dec 10 - pink flocked tree

Sophie has pink tinged walls in her bedroom. With a 40% off coupon, we bought a 36 inch tall pink flocked tree from Michaels a couple of weeks back. It has a few Disney Princess decorations on it. It's all quite girly :)

No, Fynn does not have a blue tree. He would likely chew on it if he did.

Dec 9 - speech

About a year and a half ago, I made an appointment with our Health Unit to have Sophie's speech assessed. At the time she had picked up a bit of a stammer. The therapist assured us that it was something that she would grow out of (and she did).

Lately we have noticed that her s/z sounds come out as a lisp. They really seem to encourage parents to get their children's speech assessed if they have any concerns, so I called the number again for an appointment. I told Sophie we were going to the Health Unit to have a chat with one of the ladies there who also has some great toys (which she does).

Christina was very laid back. She just watched Sophie and I play together and talk. Fortunately there are a lot of "s" sounds right now...Christmas, Santa, sleep, etc so it was easy to get Sophie to talk.

She assured us that Sophie's speech development is good - she went through a chart with me about all of the milestones she has hit. As far as her "s" are concerned, she will likely outgrow it (the lisping can go for as long as 8 years old), but one way to help her tongue make the right sounds is for her to use a straw as often as possible. Something about how sucking from a straw works to retract the tongue and make speech more clear. Drinking everything from milk to thick smoothies (the thicker the better as takes more effort).

Needless to say, straws are a pretty easy sell with her. So, we are off to the dollar store tomorrow to find a supply of straws.

Dec 8 - around the house

We don't have our tree yet -- that's for this coming weekend.

Just a few decorations so far. I think we'll keep it simple this year.

We have a cool little alcove in our hallway that has a huge apothocary jar in it which is now filled with green balls.

Dec 7 - Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

Today was the wrap up for Sophie's ballet season. Her pre-kinder class did Rudolph the Red nose Reindeer. Jana (another mom) and I were helper moms. We dressed the kids in their costumes, stayed with them during the other kids' performances and escorted the girls on and off the stage. Sophie and her group did really well (as did all the groups). She was so proud of herself and we were proud of our little dancer, too. As a special treat, I gave her a Hannah Montana necklace after her performance. After that we had a nice dinner and visit at my aunt and uncle's place. Perfectly nice Sunday.

Dec 6 - Library fun

Our library had their annual Christmas kids' entertainment today.
This year it was Cowboy Julie and her little dog Cactus Flower.

I was a bit skeptical at first, but they were really fun and did lots of cowboy songs that got the kids involved. Her little dog (who reminded me of our old dog Riley) did some cute tricks.

We met up with our friend Kim and her two kids Jack and Kate. We followed that up with doing some crafts at a station in the mall and then headed over to the community pool for Kenny's birthday.

A very full day -- somebody should sleep well tonight!

Dec 5 - sore feet and TGIF

By 7pm tonight my feet were sore.
We had our usual Friday night dinner at Boston Pizza then we headed over
to Zellers to buy Sophie's little buddy Kenny his birthday gift (the one pack) for his
party tomorrow at our indoor centre pool.

By the time Sophie had dragged me to her usual favourite haunts in Zellers, I was aching to go home (I was still wearing my work high heels).

TGIF :)

Dec 4 - creating meaning (or brownies)

After a day of work and then sometimes 45 minutes at the gym, I want to create some special time with Sophie and Fynn.

Right now Fynn is easy. He wants to be nursed, have his bath and then a little playtime before bed (not in that order necessarily).

With Sophie, she wants more. We don't watch TV after dinner with her and after playing at daycare all day, she really wants to do something with mom or dad.

Lately, we've taken to doing a very simple craft or maybe baking. Our easy go-to recipe is basic brownies from 101 Best Brownie Recipes. Sophie loves to lick the spoon...even though she shouldn't since it has raw eggs (shhh).

Dec 3 - getting ready for the recital

Sophie's big day is coming up this Sunday.

Her dance school is having their Christmas program.
Her class is dressed as little reindeers. They are very cute.
I haven't seen them perform yet, but I've seen a few peeks.

Another mom and I are the volunteers who will sit with the girls while they wait for their turn to go onstage. We are basically there to take anyone to the bathroom who forgets to go ahead of time.

Daddy and Fynn will be in the audience. Definately a video camera moment.

(this is a picture of Sophie in her class -- she now has a little skirt like the other girls :)

letters from Santa

Santa wrote back letters to Sophie and Fynn. What fun to pick those up from the mailbox. Our retired Canada Post employees create some special magic at Christmas.

documenting December

Last year, I did
Shimelle's Christmas Journal
. It was a challenge to do a daily page. This year, I will be content if I can blog each day in December.

Vic is away at a conference and it's just been me and my sweeties.
Poor Fynn is sick. I got a call from the daycare at 3pm that he was really cranky, so I picked him up and took him to the doctor -- he's got a bad cold. Poor baby. He's sleeping now.

Sophie has been staying up too late these past couple of nights. I think because daddy is away, mama likes a little extra company, and Sophie is happy to oblige. Tonight we watched Christmas with the Cranks. Corny but cute.

And here are some baby feet from the other day.
