snowmen cookies

a sweet friend named Suzanne recommended the magazine Country Home Holiday with Matthew Mead. while i love to read magazines, especially about crafts, lifestyle and home decor i'm also not often one to try and attempt the projects in them.
usually too complicated, costly, and i always have trouble finding the supplies they use. i don't live in a large metro area.

but the Matthew Mead mag is different. i can see myself doing some of them.
i fell in love with his snowman cookies. instead of pfferneuse cookies, i used the holiday white oreos and edible markers for their face.

easy - they are going to sophie's daycare tomorrow for treats.

christmas book club

we had a nice change from our regular book club meeting this time. a few of us met at Karen's house...we had treats...brought our kids...and read Christmas stories. smaller than normal turnout due to the snowfall we've been getting here.

poor sophie did not like The Christmas Carol selection that was read. scrooge seemed to upset her. but not the half dozen 2 bite brownies she ate.

a winter home

brrr...it's snowing out this morning.
glad it's Sunday and we don't have to go far today.

this book looks perfect for a day like today.

Calico Critters

Sophie started playing with these little adorable creatures at a toy store during our trip to Montreal. She was mesmerized for about a good 20 minutes talking to them, posing them, and hugging them.

I bought her a set of this family for Christmas. Since they are quite small, I think they will be great for hand-eye coordination plus she loves to act out her little scenarios (so good for socialization/family roles too).

bonjour

we just got back home a couple of hours ago.
the laundry is ON.

Montreal is lovely. my favourite part is definately old Montreal (Vieux-Montreal).
The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Montreal (Our Lady of Montreal Basilica) was the highlight I think. It opened in 1829 and everything in it is on a grand scale. Celine Dion was married there and Pierre Trudeau's funeral was held there. It's rather jaw dropping -- and not in a garish way.

The shopping was also quite amazing. St. Catherine's Street, plus the underground shopping was great. The citizens are very friendly and extremely accomodating in switching to English if you do not speak French. Vic and I found that our high school french left something to be desired. French immersion for Sophie is looking like more of a possibility.

Here are some photos.

studio 60

we've started to watch this on Monday nights.

it seems to be holding our attention for now. the writing is pretty good - very West Wingish since the exec producer is the same guy who did West Wing. sometimes i find the dialogue too fast and it's almost hard to understand what the characters are saying.

i like steven weber, matthew perry and bradley whitford, and john goodman was great guest staring tonight. do NOT like Amanda Peet. i seriously don't think she can act, plus i find her unbelievable as the President of a network. maybe she'll grow on me, maybe the character will develop and unfold. she needs some edge in my opinion.

just my 2 cents.

flashback (1986)

back in December of 1986, i was in my second year of university at the University of Victoria. studying sociology, english, psychology and political science. which led me to deciding i wanted to study business, which required a complete re-shifting of gears...moving back home, earning some more money, going to a different school, etc...an interesting (difficult) switch, but good in the end.

i came home for Christmas that 2nd year with wild hair, FULL eyebrows and padded shoulders.

nice.
